We come to the end of another week . Next week (Tuesday) is Valentine's Day and while there won't be a class party, students in 4th grade will have time to pass out Valentine's Day cards. Please ensure that your child brings a card for each student in the class so that everyone feels included.
The weekly parent email has been sent out and I have again updated the Important Dates and Events section at the bottom as well as my calendar page.
Instead of assigning homework for next week, I have created an online practice test for next week's math common assessment on Wednesday and Thursday.
In math, I decided to not do multiplying a fraction by a whole number until next week. I instead focused on subtracting fractions and mixed numbers from whole numbers. For example, one problem might be something like 13 - 3 3/4. In order to solve the problem, students incorporate regrouping (used to be called "borrowing") first. One would be taken from the 13 and converted to a fraction. The denominator is 4 so the fraction would be 4/4. Anytime the numerator and the denominator are the same, it means 1 whole. So I am taking one from the 13 and making it 12 4/4. Now, they can subtract.
In science, we have completed the the Earth in the Universe unit. On Monday, we will begin with Earth History with a study of how fossils allow us to understand what ancient life was like. We will also learn about rapid and slow physical changes to the Earth's surface.
