The second week of the school year has come to an end and next week will be the first truly normal week. By now, the students have started to settle into the school routine and are in learning mode.
Next week is when Mr. McDonald will begin his pull-outs since COGAT testing has been completed.
In literacy, we are continuing our writing unit focusing on personal narratives. Today, I went over the technique on adding dialogue to a story. We are also continuing with independent reading as well as the read-aloud I am doing.
In math, we took the weekly warm-up quiz that reviewed a lot of prior material. The focus for today's lesson was to reinforce the concept that in place value, each time you move a place to the left, it represents ten times more. The guided practice (with answer key) is shown below.
After going over it, I gave the students their independent activity:
In science, the students watched an episode of Bill Nye the Science Guy. To make them accountable, each student did the video quiz. This involved answering questions (mostly true or false) as the video played. Since the questions were not in chronological order, it was important to pay attention. But, I did allow the students a few minutes to read over it beforehand.
The weekly parent email has been sent out and the section on important upcoming dates has been updated.
Lastly, today was the first reward day. I use Class Dojo to keep track of behaviors and I have a tiered system of increased rewards to coincide with the number of points earned. Each negative behavior results in points being lost.
