Today is the first of our three day week on the eve of winter break. Today and tomorrow will still be devoted to the academic since I want to keep my students as engaged as possible. There is still so much to learn so I want to minimize the regression over the break.
Wednesday is devoted to class parties and mine is from around 1:30 to 3:00. After we quickly clean up, the students head to specials.
In science I did I few demonstrations of heat energy. The first one was the ball and ring experiment. I have a brass sphere connected to a handle and a ring of roughly the same diameter as the sphere. At room temperature, the sphere can be inserted in and out of the ring very easilly. When the sphere is exposed to a flame such as a blow torch, the sphere will expand due to thermal expansion - the atoms and molecules vibrate more rapidly causing them to spread out. The solid matter thus expands. When placed in cold water or ice, it quickly contracts back to its original size.
The other experiment was a demonstration of a hand boiler. A hand boiler has colored water in a sealed glass container. When the bottom is encased within a person's hand, the heat causes it to rise to the top chamber. Placing the hand over the top chamber causes the liquid to return to the bottom.
