Today we administered the big quarter one literacy test. Since it has multiple reading passages, it will be administered over a two-day period. Also, this test was done completely online with the students using their Chromebooks. The reasoning behind it is due to End-of-Grade testing switching over to computerized tests instead of the traditional paper and pencil tests. So, we are doing this to prepare the students better for what is to come.
In science, we continued with Force and Motion with the focus on magnetism. Students reviewed yesterday's experiment but first did a warm-up:
Then, I did this experiment twice using two types of magnets: ceramic and the powerful neodymium ones. What I proved is that the magnetic force diminishes both over distance and due to interference. The more sheets of paper or card stock (or wood - whatever), the less of a force of attraction there is.
Then, I had students copy the following into their science notebooks:
Once the notes were copied into their science notebooks, I then asked the question concerning yesterday's experiment/activity: why were some of the materials in the cup attracted to the magnet and some were not? The last line of their notes was the key: all of the materials that were attracted to the magnet had iron content.
