We are back from the long weekend which included the observance of Martin Luther King Day and a teacher workday. Due to the lost instructional days earlier in the year with the inclement weather, the teacher workdays scheduled for February and March are now make-up days. This means that there are no scheduled breaks between now and spring break, which the week of April 15th. We began the new quarter today so this is officially the beginning of the second half of the year. We are working on context clues in literacy, which means that we don't always have a dictionary with us, the author doesn't always define the word. Sometimes when we are reading, we will coma across a word whose meaning is unknown. Today's strategy was to use prior knowledge from a similar text, along with looking at how the word is used in the text, to determine its meaning. I started off with the word colony and had the students look at a paragraph used in the passage that was given to them. We determined that a colony was a settlement of people in a new location. We then did the same thing with culture, which is a shared system of food, beliefs, language, religion, etc. I then did one more word and students wrote it down on a slip of paper as an exit ticket. The word was industry and students read the text and came up with a definition of the word based on its use in the document. Students who were in need of extra help were pulled into a small group while the others read independently. ![]()
In JA Biztown we continued with the financial unit. Students on Friday filled out their applications for the three jobs of their choice and Ms. Bischoff and Ms. Eiger are still sorting through them to assign jobs.
