It's the end of the week and the end of preparing for JA Biztown.  Monday we go and then we will move on to social studies.  In science, we continued with minerals.  On Tuesday, we will be entering the third and final part of the Matter:  Properties and Change unit with the study of rocks.  We had to push everything back a day to make sure that everything for JA Biztown has been finished.

The weekly parent email has gone out and as always, I archive them here.

Here is the warm-up....

Afterwards, we made candy!  What we made is something called "Hard Crack" which is basically what hard candy is called.  Its purpose was to simulate igneous rock (lava) hardening.  This is where minerals come from.  Once the candy was made it was poured into silicone cupcake molds.

With the "minerals", the students examined the luster (the way that light reflects off of it), hardness, and cleavage by breaking it in two.

This actually was quite difficult since I only have a plug-in burner and it took a LONG time to get to 300°, which is the temperature needed for candy to reach the hard crack stage.  This is where at least 90% of the water has evaporated leaving the dissolved sugar and corn syrup.  It is also much thicker than before which is also essential.
Here is the recipe:
