This week is the last week of October and the prelude to the holidays that are rapidly coming up.  This will be a normal week with only one exception and that is Picture Day on Wednesday.  Students will not need to be in uniform that day.  Below is a copy of the flyer that went home (front and back):

Also, there are no fall parties for this year and this is school-wide.  Parents may have their child bring in cookies (or something like that) to share at lunch.

In science, we went back and did a focused lesson on Moh's Scale of Hardness.  Today's warm-up was a little different but I like to change things up and try different ways to have them apply what they know.

As I had mentioned above, today's focus was on Moh's Scale of Hardness and it was an opportunity for students to use the scale to answer questions such as identifying an unknown mineral based on given clues.  We did one together as a group for practice.

Then, the class was given the option of working independently, in pairs, or in small groups to do the main activity.  This one was a little more challenging but they managed to succeed as they always do.

I have two reminders:  the quiz that was originally scheduled for last Thursday will be administered Wednesday.  It will be a simple ten-question quiz covering the three types of rocks and the rock cycle.

Also, the homework was sent out on Thursday and is due this Friday.  Your child may do this as many times as needed.  I will say this:  if the homework questions can be mastered then there should be no problems on the quiz.

Here is a hard copy if needed →→→→→→

Afterwards, we continued working on the social studies assignment in class.

A note on social studies:  a year-long project will soon be assigned to each student.  I will be sending home the handout as soon as it is printed and will explain it in much more detail as well.  A copy of it along with a timeline of due dates will be posted in the Social Studies section of this Weebly page too.

Simply put, the students will be doing a guided project that is all about North Carolina.  While the final due date will be near the end of the year, there will be other deadlines throughout the year so that it can be divided into more manageable chunks.  I will, of course, be giving reminders in my weekly email.
