We begin the month of December and the countdown to winter break! Three weeks from now the students will be home for a long and well-deserved break. I truly stand by saying well-deserved due to how awesome their test scores have been! Since we are in the second of our three day reteach/enrich/retest process, I continued with long division with two-digit divisors. It was not easy despite the rules of division being the same and the process (or algorithm) being the same. It just takes practice to master this skill and while it does involve extra steps (estimation and multiplying), the extra steps are worthwhile to keep prior skills fresh. I did add one twist for my second block group: after the first few problems they were no longer allowed to write down the quotient with a remainder. Instead, they had to write the quotient as a decimal. For example, take 4,384 ÷ 84. By dividing correctly the answer is 52 with a remainder of 16. However, my second block had to write the quotient as 52.19 since I tell them to stop at the second number to the right of the decimal (hundredths place). ![]()
In science, the students watched an episode of Bill Nye the Science Guy and took the video quiz. ![]()
