Now that the MAP testing has been completed, we are focusing on the last 4th grade math concept: line plots. I covered it today and will end the week by reviewing it tomorrow. Monday will be devoted to a comprehensive review for the 5th and final math common assessment. After that, we will be in review and EOG preparation mode until then. In fact, three weeks from today is the math EOG and that will end testing for the year as far as the 4th grade is concerned.

Since today is Thursday, we had science. We are still in ecosystems and today's focus was on living organisms and their needs or; how living organisms meet their needs to survive. How this was taught today was after a discussion of the above, the focus shifted to plants and what they need in order to not just survive but to thrive. We came up with: sunlight, carbon dioxide, water, soil, and nutrients. We then did a hands-on make-and-take (eventually) activity in which students were given a cilantro seed (coriander) to plant. Each student was given a long toothpick, a small plastic condiment cup, and a peat pellet. The pellet was placed into the condiment cup and then I came around poured water into the cup. The pellet absorbed the water and grew into a taller cylinder. The students then took the toothpick to make a small indentation into the peat soil and planted the seed. Lastly, each student was given a blank sticker on which they wrote their names, placed it on the cup, and set it on the ledge under the window to get sunlight. Once the plants sprout, I will add liquid plant food to the soil and we will also water it to keep it moist. I also am experimenting by planting a seed into a used Keurig K-Cup so coffee grounds will be my "soil." We shall see.
