As I had mentioned in yesterday's entry, today was focused on JA Biztown. While the emphasis was on social studies, the students still came in for a science warm-up. Today's warm-up was different since it closely resembled the math warm-ups that I had the students do last year in the second half of the year. In other words, there was a lot more on it.
This one had ten questions and the students responded by filling in the bubble sheet on the reverse side. I use the iPad and the Zipgrade app to scan the paper with the camera and it gives both myself and the student immediate feedback.
Overall, the students did pretty well on this warm-up, which was like a practice quiz. I did have to mention to the classes to be mindful of transfer. What I meant by this is when they do the paper first and after marking their answers, they bubble them in. So for example, if the student chooses answer choice C for number 7, they need to be sure they bubble in C on the actual answer sheet. Otherwise, it gets counted wrong.
Tomorrow's will not be as long.
I scanned and graded the warm-ups and your child should be taking his/her's home. Please note that it isn't a single grade in the grade book but just one of many that will be averaged. By next Friday the mid-quarter warm-up averages will be in Parent Portal.
Today, we focused exclusively on JA Biztown's first lesson which is all about financial institutions and the services they provide. We will be getting into writing checks and each student will be given a mock checkbook and register. They will get practice writing checks and reconciling them in the register in preparation for the actual field trip.
Mr. McCurley, who teaches music, has asked all of the 4th grade teachers to remind parents that money for recorders is due tomorrow.
Lastly, the homework that was assigned last Friday is due tomorrow. I will not be sending out an assignment tomorrow since the practice test that went live yesterday will serve as the homework. The students may do this as many times as necessary to master the content for Tuesday's unit test.
