As you may already know, literacy is a big focus this year in our school district. Though I do teach science and social studies (beginning next week), I too will be integrating literacy and its skills in my class. I have already mentioned how integral math is with science (math is the language of science) and conversely science with math (math is the science of patterns). Literacy too is integral because in order for knowledge to be shared and gained, it must be effectively communicated. Effective communication means to be understandable so that data can be transmitted in a more efficient manner, at least that's the way I see it.
So, enough with the philosophy.....
That being stated, today's focus was the literacy tie-in. The students read a passage and answered five questions that required the use of referencing the text. In essence, it means to go back into the passage and find the answer.
We also watch a short 15 minute video that reinforced magnetism. It is a bit silly but the content is worthwhile.
I have updated the Notes and Study Guides page by adding a podcast that can be streamed through the page or downloaded as an .mp 3. I used a digital voice named Kate to narrate the text. It is only 1:30 minutes.
There is a change to the testing schedule in science. Next week on Wednesday the 9th, there will be a ten question quiz on magnetism. It is in the calendar and I am very confident that the students will be quite prepared for it.
