Our first math quiz was given out today. I knew that virtually everyone in my class would at least show mastery (80% or above) but I am happy to say that my class made me proud! Everyone in my class showed mastery! While not every student scored a 100, 100 was the most common score. GREAT JOB!!!
The first science quiz on magnetism will be on Thursday. If students have been reading over their notes and paying attention to the purpose of the experiments, then they will do just fine. For example, yesterday we made compasses by floating a magnetized needle on a twist top bottle cap. It aligned with Earth's magnetic field. Every activity and experiment, every demonstration has a specific purpose and it will most likely be on a test.
While a significant part of math was dedicated to the quiz, I still had the students do a prewarm-up first thing in the morning. These are not graded and are just done on scrap paper.
Literacy on Tuesdays and Thursdays has the students in my class the entire time. Mr. McDonald does the team teaching and pull-outs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
We focused on context clues and referencing the text along with Close reading strategies with a longer passage. I will get more into Close reading at a later date. We also continued with the writing process. Today's focus was on writing an exciting lead, or hook at the beginning of the story to capture a reader's interest. This will be graded and I want to allow them a few more minutes tomorrow to work on it. The grade will be based on a simple rubric (see above left) and will be stapled to your child's work when it goes home with the rest of the graded papers on Thursday.
In math, as I mentioned at the beginning, we did the first quiz and I am very pleased with the results! Keep up the awesome work!
The focus for science today was a literacy tie-in in which they read a short passage and answered some comprehension questions. Tomorrow they make an electromagnet. Thursday will be the science quiz but if they review their notes they will do just fine. l reviewed today and will again tomorrow in class.
