Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful time and is ready to get the new year off to a great start. Since this is a short week, we will be easing back into the routine of school.
Math was a review of the basics of fractions with going over the numerator and denominator. I did cover equivalent fractions with my 2nd block but will cover it more in depth tomorrow.
In science we are starting to bring the energy unit to a close. I did an experiment today to prove two concepts: that light travels in a straight path until interfered with and the Law of Reflection. The Law of Reflection states that light will reflect at the exact same angle from which it came.
We then did the experiment after the warm-up. Each pair was given a one liter bottle of tonic water and a blue laser pointer. The tonic water contains quinine which reacts with ultraviolet (black light) and a blue laser. When any light at the 405 nm frequency comes into contact with the quinine, a reaction occurs and it flouresces allowing the beam of light to be seen since enough is being absorbed to be visible.
