What We Did Today

This entry is going to be shorter than the others.  But, we did begin the new math unit.....
Today's math had the beginning-of-unit pretest, which is what we will be doing each time we begin a new unit.  The pretest was on paper and consisted of ten exercises (problems).  Some of them had multiple choice answers while others were open-ended and required a short answer.  Students were instructed to show their work on each exercise so I can see their thinking process.  There is no one particular way of solving a problem in math.  I use my system called 2C.  What does that mean?

It means that students are free to use any method at all (unless specifically required to use one on a particular problem) to solve an exercise as long as it is Correct and Consistent - hence, the 2 C's.

In other words, they are free to use whichever method as long as it works each time.
In social studies (we are in the process of looking at another science unit that would be a better fit) students re-read their refugee story and then filled out a graphic organizer.
In literacy, we discussed the reading response log and what goes into it.  Students are going to hand write their entries in their hardcover notebooks from now on.
